바다와 연안은 인류에게 자원과 식량을 제공해 주고, 지구의 대기 및 열의 순환조절을 통해 지구의 기후를 조절하는 기능을 가지고 있습니다. 이러한 점에서 “살아있는 바다와 숨쉬는 연안”은 인류 모두가 지향해야 할 과제라고 판단됩니다.
대한민국은 세계박람회가 바다와 연안의 보존을 위한 인류 공동노력의 필요성을 인식하고 논의하는 좋은 기회라는 점을 인식하고 1996년 여수에서 해양을 주제로 하는 세계박람회 개최를 결정하고 2010 세계등록박람회 유치를 추진한 바 있습니다.
현재 대한민국 정부는 확고한 정부의 의지, 월드컵, 올림픽과 같은 국제행사 경험과 함께 개최후보지인 여수지역 주민들의 강력한 개최희망, 꾸준하고 성실한 준비를 바탕으로 2012년 세계인정박람회의 개최를 다시 추진하고 있습니다.
2012년 여수세계박람회는 지구촌의 시민사회와 중요한 정책을 결정하는 사람들이 바다와 연안의 중요성과 기능이 무엇인지, 그리고 바다와 연안의 황폐화가 어떠한 결과들을 초래하는지 명확히 인식하고, 살아있는 바다와 숨쉬는 연안을 실현하는 방안을 진지하게 고민하는 장을 만들고자 합니다.
The earth’s oceans and coasts are sources of abundant natural resources and food. It also controls the global climate through the circulation of air and geothermal energy. In this light, we believe that preservation of the oceans and coasts is a global undertaking that should be pursued by all humankind.
Recognizing the valuable opportunity offered by International EXPO to discuss and reaffirm joint human efforts towards the preservation of the oceans and coasts, the Korean government decided in 1996, to host the EXPO in Yeosu under the theme of the ocean and has since worked to secure the bid for the 2010 International Registered Expo.
Now the Korean government is once again preparing to host the 2012 International Recognized Expo based on its strong resolve, Its past successes in hosting international events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, the strong aspiration of the residents of Yeosu and the tireless and faithful preparation.
We hope to create the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea into a venue where civil society and key policy- makers of the world will gain a clear understanding of the significance of the ocean and coast as well as the repercussions of its destruction, and contemplate measures to realize an oceans and coasts flourish. |
