War Horse
Customer Ratings: - Inspired piece of writing, thought provoking and touching. With the huge success of the play in the West End I thought I would read the book and was surprised about how poignant and touching the story of a horse sold to the army was as the tale unfolded.
The message of the book is that humanity has a lot more in common with shared values than we might think even when at loggerheads, the horses in the book are looked after by the English and then German army before being looked after by a young French girl.
In the end the horse becomes a symbol for the English army and in particular it s former owner as when the war is coming to an end the horse reminds them of home and of the special relationship the young English groom had when he first worked the horse at home. - A Worthy Partner to Private Peaceful. Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo is the story of a young British soldier tried for cowardice in the First World War. Powerfully written and unflinching in its portrayal of barbarity it is definitely a book for older teens.
In War Horse Morpurgo has found a story which still illustrates the horrors of the First World War, but in a way which will appeal to and be understood by younger readers from about 11 upwards.
This story is told by Joey, a horse brought up in a rural farming community in the South of England, who is sold by the farmer to the recruiting officers looking for cavalry horses to take into battle.
Joey s account of the war takes him across France and across No Man s Land to both sides who are fighting. He is set to work both as a cavalry horse and pulling guns and ambulances as well as having to work the land. His journey shows us the war from every possible angle and shows the human side and cost of such an epic story, as all the while he searches for his original owner Albert, who had vowed to come and find him no matter what.
Despite the subject matter this is a strangely unsentimental story, which works so well because it is told through neutral eyes.
It has recently been translated as a stage play by the National Theatre in London and has just transferred to the West End. It is a remarkable telling of what is a remarkable book, and if you enjoyed this I urge you to go and see it if you possibly can.
