Upgrading and Repairing PCs
Customer Ratings: - An excellent title. I have been looking around for a good book on PC repair for a long while and I m pleased to say I found it !!.
As others have said the DVD is about networking and not PC repair but I don t feel it detracts from the book at all. It just lets me know more about networking ! Thats a bonus for me. I wanted a book that would not just skim the surface but go deeper into subjects which this does. Maybe a little too much info on PC history but hey that doesn t matter. As a previous purchaser of Scott Muellers books, I knew this would be great and I wasn t disapointed. Well recommended. - A little too deep. Although this series from Scott Mueller has proved its worth over the years (I have some very early volumes) in these days of plug n play and straightforward card and board replacements the task of upgrading and repairing PCs rarely, if ever, stumbles into the depths of the technology in such detail. Although it might be interesting for some it does make it difficult sometimes to find the necessary information for the far simpler task at hand.
- Phenomenal amount of information. This book contains a simply phenomenal amount of information. Keeping up with everything that appears in the world of hardware must be a full-time job - I take my hat off to the author.
Does it contain everything there is to know - of course not, but it contains far more than I had expected. And for someone like myself who usually sticks to the software side of things and who hasn t really delved inside PCs seriously for quite a few years, this book answers lots of questions that had been hanging out there for a while.
I suspect that the sheer amount of information included might overwhelm those who are completely new to hardware, but for anyone who has ever taken the case off a PC this book will be a treasure.
- THE PC Bible. This book is an absolute MUST for anyone that wants to learn about upgrading and repairing PC s.
It explains everything in simple terms although if you are a complete novice I suspect it may be a little confusing. Ideal if you already understand the basics and are attending a course. Every chapter is in depth with diagrams at times in exploded view which helps you understand the components.
Each section has problem solving and solutions.
As the other reviewer stated, the accompanying disc which should be a three hour dvd on upgrading and repairing is actually a dvd on networking. I just see this as an added bonus, an extension to the book itself.
All in all an excellent book
- Exceptionally Brilliant. But........... This book really is fantastic. A real credit to its author. It is the Volvo of the computer world.......indeed the entire book world. Amazon sold it to me for £15.14 a truly exeptional bargain. As I write this, they are charging £21.49 (reduced from £42.99). A really great bargain. Further, I would still have been delighted even if I had paid full price.
I cannot praise this book enough. The perfect 10 out of 10!
In addition, the book is hardback. A joy to have, to hold and to own. The paper is very good quality and is lovely and white (not oatmeal/grey like some books.)
Now we come to the But....... . The DVD that is with the book is the WRONG DVD! It is not about upgrading and repairing pc s but about networking. My guess is that the company that duplicates the DVD got them mixed up. (The author also writes a book about networking.)
Amazon offered me a replacement or a refund, but I declined both. There was no point in have a replacement because I strongly suspect that ALL the books have the wrong DVD (perhaps hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of them.) I am so pleased with the book that I didn t want a refund. In all honesty, I bought this item for the book and the DVD was just a bonus. So not having my bonus is not too important.
I have emailed the publisher to try to help them, and the author, but no reply yet. I have written to Amazon, and spoken to their customer help. But of course it is not Amazon s fault in any way.
So that is my review. The book is brilliant and very highly recommended at any price. The DVD is totally the incorrect DVD. Hopefully in due course this will be corrected.
