Ten Years Behind The Mast

Product Description:

  • Personal Account of a ten year circumnavigation aboard the 35 Ft. classic wooden sailboat, Theodora R

Customer Ratings:

  • Very good read!!. This was a very good read from front to back. I can t say much more about the book than has already been said by the other reviewers except that this book is worthy of the 5 star rating that they have given it.

I was happy to tag along with Fritz on his journey at sea and on land. As I approached the end of the book, I was getting sad knowing that the story would soon be coming to an end. I can t say that about too many books.

(Note: I was handed this book by the author s father, Walter. I met Walter while we were both taking a class at the WoodenBoat school in Maine. He told me to give it a read and write Fritz to tell him how I liked the book. Unfortuately, Walter never gave me Fritz s address. So here I write. Somebody should sit Walter down and write his World War II story. I hope I am taking classes when I am 80 like Walter.)
  • Glad to be invited along for the journey. Fritz has an easy, self-deprecating style which engages the reader. He clearly has a passion for travel and exploration and a deep love of the sea, and he is an ideal travel companion. We enjoy being brought along as passengers on the journey of a lifetime, and marvel at his resourcefulness and courage.
  • a must for people like myself. This book has been properly reviewed. Because of this i think it is better to tell you a little about myself and the reasons i like this book than to review the book itself (seems crazy but the rum will do it to ya,lol) I, for one, am a gypsy in my own right. I have travled the country over two or three times. The only time ive been out of the country: a few drunkin nights to tijuana. That doesnt count. I am younge in age (21) and younge at heart (the most important). The walls of my house are plastered in dozens (probably close to 100) maps of different places. from world maps to town maps and everything in between. My wonder-lust soul has a thirst that can only be quenched by moving. I fall asleep dreaming of far off places and encounters. To be honest, im probably considered a dork because i have actually rigged up a lighiting system to light up maps in my bedroom. this way i can see them whilst going to sleep but the light doesnt effect my sleep habbits. the long and short of it is I DONT WANT TO BE HERE. no matter where here is. i want to go and see and explore. explore seas, places, people, cultures, you name it I WANT TO SEE IT.

this was not ment to be an auto-bio but its the closest thing ive ever written to it,lol.

if you have atleast one of these charateristics (sp?) then you need to read this book. its good for the mind and the soul. it is one of those type of books that leave you thinking and constantly looking at your world map. i am the type of person that loves to study cultures. not only what they are but why they are. this book will only add fuel to the fire.

on second thought, maybe you shouldnt read this book. if you do, you will probably stay up all night reading or dreaming of leaving everything behind and leaving.

i can not give this book a better reco. it is worth the price and worth the time.

the only drawback is that: it is way too short. it is a book you regret finishing because once you do, its over.
  • Great Adventure, Great Adventurer. Ten Years Behind the Mast is a unique book. It delivers as promised the kind of true life adventure story that I come to autobiographical nonfiction looking for. But it also gave me something else which in the end was a lot more important. Ten Years Behind The Mast is also a recipe of sorts. It is the recipe of all the ingredients of the successful undertaking of a great journey.

Ten Years Behind The Mast gives the careful reader an inventory of the specifics of skill, devotion, sacrifice, wonder and determination that are demanded from those who would set out in quest of their own dream.

Where other books would have the reader believe that an adventure moves only from cliff hanger to cliff hanger Ten Years Behind the Mast sets us aboard the Theodora R as a silent member of the crew and gives the reader a blue print for an adventure that takes in the most amazing people and places in the world.
  • Great Read. 10 Years Behind the Mast is Fritz Damler s memoir of his ten year voyage around the world in a 35 foot sail boat. This incredible adventure is described with excellent, compelling writing complete with horrific storms and shark attacks. But it also includes the author s commentary and observations of the diverse cultures he encountered and his interactions with people in many different nations. Damler not only sailed around the world, he encountered the world by taking the time to explore a variety of countries and meet many people. His written descriptions are complemented with many photographs and maps. This is a must read for anyone who likes a real life adventure story and especially those who enjoy travel, sailing, or learning about other cultures.
