Tai Chi For Beginners [2002] [DVD]

Customer Ratings:

  • perfect if you have enough space. This is the second dvd I ve bought of Dr.Lam s Tai Chi exercises, and by the looks of things it will not be my last.

This DVD is ideal for anyone learning from home, if you have space available to move around in that is, at least 16x7 feet or 6x2 meters.
The way he describes and presents things makes you feel like you were right there, in person, in his class.

Many of us have come across supposedly self-instructional dvd s/tapes before, only to be disappointed when they only show you things but do not explain things intelligibly for normal human beings.
This DVD is different, it instructs you, and Dr.Lam describes all the movements and guides you through them.

The first 17 minutes or so consists of warm-ups and stretches, DR.Lam goes through all them in detail and you do them together with his class.
These stretches are designed for Tai Chi so they are not the regular gym-class type of thing, it was interesting doing them.
Then there s an introduction to Qigong with a number of postures or arm movements coordinated with breathing.

After this is a set of foundational movements, i.e. essential Tai Chi footwork and hand movements. He guides you through all of them in detail and you see many examples of it. They don t take up much space and you can easily do them in your room.

The final section covers a Tai Chi beginners set. This basic form is split up into several more manageable parts, so you learn it part-by-part, you see the form from the front as well as from the back - your perspective.
This form requires quite alot of space, at least 16x7 feet or 6x2 meters. I don t have this much space available myself and so I just do the individual parts by themselves in the space I have, works for me.

So if you have the space, this is a good DVD to learn some Tai Chi from.
  • Does what it says on the tin.. I bought this DVD because there are no classes near where I live. It was just like a class in the comfort of my own home. Just what I wanted. Top.
  • It is possible to learn Tai Chi by yourself. This DVD has chapter selection, one is about breathing, one is for warm up exercises then you move on to foundation movements. Once you have mastered these, all you need are a few small joining movements to put it all together for the full set. There is also a chapter that shows the full set being performed by Dr Lam. It shows how the movements go in a straight line forwards and then a straight line backwards. You will find that you need about 12ft of clear area and enough space to open your arms wide.
It could take me 3 or 4 days sometimes, to learn a move properly. It helped to write down what Dr Lam said so that I could practice throughout the day. It was also useful, after a while, to watch without the sound and in slow motion. It helped me to be more aware of the subtle movements.
As previously mentioned, if you want to learn Tai Chi thourougly, this is a great DVD to buy.
  • Very effective for learning Tai Chi. Based on my experience I can confidently state that one can learn Tai Chi from this DVD.
I have tried books and two other DVDs but this is the best DVD to start with.
    Very effective from day 1.

Dr Lam has loads of information at his website and there is a very friendly and helpful forum where you can ask questions. Dr Lam or another expert will answer you.

I was adviced to use this DVD before progressing on to more advanced DVDs. It is best to try and perfect few movements than to learn many.
  • Welcome to Tai Chi. I think that would be an apt way of looking at this DVD. It s a very good DVD, and is taught very well. I bought it to learn, and learn I did. Dr. Lam, although not talking in his mother tongue, explains the movements very well, and even uses some of his pupils.
If there was one thing I would fault the DVD on, it s that it s ever so slightly fast. I would personally prefer it slightly slower (but maybe that s a personal thing). On the other hand, Dr. Lam can take his time whilst you re stuck in a pose.
Other than these personal niggles, the DVD is very good and well worth buying to learn a few basic movements to start with. The next logical step is the 24 movements (which Dr. Lam has also made a DVD of).
