Gomorrah: Italy s Other Mafia

Zákazník Žebříčky:

  • I think this book should have never been translated!. Finally someone has the guts of letting the world know what happens in the South of Italy, telling a truly and insight truth. I am from Naples I know every single person and story that has been mentioned in the book, but to read it has still surprised me! It has given me a view of what there is behind the killings or the street s telling, of how big is this empire in the world, not just in Italy as everyone always thinks. Unfortunately to let the world know about this the only way was to translate this book, which I think it s impossible to translate it to make you all feel the goose bumps.
Please do not read this book if you only reads books expecting a drama story or a romantic ending, etc...this is reality, this is what happens behind your backs on a daily basis, this is about the power and about people above us which preside over the nations.
Don t bother to leave negative reviews about this book simply because you cannot understand, or you find it boring, you will never understand anything like this in life.
I bow to Saviano s courage and I seriously hope there will be more people willing to risk his life to give this kind of knowledge to the world!
  • Good and worth a read but could have been much better. Definetely worth a read, excellent and graphic in the way it exposes the violence and corruption off the mafia from this part of Italy - however it tends to waffle and wander aimlessly at times and feels a bit disjointed - could have been better edited / structured.

Nonetheless I m glad I read it and would still recommend it as it s a unique expose
  • A hero and a poet. I was amazed to see some of the reviews of this book that criticised the translation and found it difficult to read. For me it is a modern classic of Italian literature. The translation brings out the chaotic, headlong progress of the original and the result is, in my opinion, powerful poetic prose. This book is not a simple factual account. A book that tried to be simple and factual about the Comorra would be misleading. It is labyrinthine and the lists of names become mantra-like, it is a cluster of images and feelings that leave the reader confused but probably with a better idea of what the Comorra is and what it feels like to live with than a more coherent and organized account. Saviano is a hero and a poet of the Neapolitan people.
  • A wasted opportunity. It s a great shame that the bravery of the author has produced such a dreary book. The English translation is far too literal but seems to have been working with a poorly-written original text. Either way it s patchy and suffers from too many vices of modern Italian prose - verbosity, meandering, pretentiousness and lack of coherent structure.

The subject matter is potentially all too fascinating, which is why I bought the book. Somewhere in there and in the author s notebooks and head is probably the raw material to make a definitive work on the Camorra. Unfortunately Gomorrah: Italy s Other Mafia falls a long way short of what it could be.
  • Powerful indictment of the Naples Mafia. Roberto Saviano has produced a shocking and detailed account of the Camorra, the mafia clans in the Naples region of southern Italy. He gives names, dates and factual accounts of the murders, drug trafficing, intimidation, corruption and other crimes that support a whole way of life. At times it reads a little like a catalogue of court transcripts. His style is unusual and meandering for the English reader. However, overall this is a powerful and disturbing work that reveals the widespread evil and misery caused by mafia clans in Italy today.
